Reply to @Alakananda's question ["Can you please tell me the importance of the mudras..like Gyan mudra, Pran mudra etc"]. Thanks Alakananda for your question.
It seemed that the answer to this can also be helpful to other readers, hence I'm sharing with all the readers.
Mudras is the science of altering or redirecting energy flow in the entire body using hand gestures through acupuncture meridians, bringing your energy body to perfect alignment or balance. There are few scientific evidences supporting this claim [will be discussed in detail in Part II, stay tuned!].
How to perform mudras:
1. Sit in comfortable meditative pose- sukhasana (easy pose) or padmasana (lotus pose). Mudras can be practiced while sitting on chair too.
2. Close your eyes and focus on the breath.
3. Rub your palms for 20-30s to activate the nerve endings in the hand.
4. Place the hands, palm facing up onto your lap. Feel the tingling sensation in the palms.
5. Perform mudras, by pressing fingers in particular manner. Don't apply too much pressure. Only enough to feel the energy flow, gentle pressure is good.
6. Start with 2-5 mins, if comfortable one can practice up to 45 mins.
How to perform different mudras and their benefits:
Gyan Mudra or Knowledge mudra:
Put your hands on your lap, palms facing upward. Join the tip of your thumb with that of the index finger, stretch out the other three fingers on each hand and hold that position.
Benefits: Yogis have reported that this mudra performed consistently helps to improve concentration, ease tension, fights insomnia, depression and relieving headaches.
Pran Mudra:
Touch the tip of ring and little finger with the tip of the thumb and keep the other two fingers (index and middle) extended
Benefits: helps to strengthen immune system, helps in proper circulation, sharpens the vision and improves eyesight.
Other important mudras are:
Vayu Mudra:
Fold your index finger and touch the second phalanx bone with the tip of your thumb. Apply gentle pressure so that the tip of index finger should touch the base of the thumb. Straighten the other three fingers and keep them activated.
Benefits: Helps in easing constipation and releives from bloating, gas
Prithvi Mudra:
Just join the tips of the ring finger and the thumb and keep the other three fingers straight and active.
Benefits: helps overcome fatigue, strengthens the tissues in the body, good for any kind of skin rashes or skin diseases.
Surya Mudra:
Bend your ring finger inward, placing the tip of it at the base of the thumb and touch the second phalanx bone with the thumb and press a little. Stretch out the other three fingers.
I'm glad you had such a wonderful experience. Do continue your practice of mudras while in dhyana and notice the changes. I'll suggest you to pen down your feelings after each session and observe any changes with time.
Thanks for your question about mantra for crown chakra and meditation!
Here is my answer:
Crown chakra (sahasrara), the 7th chakra located at the tip of the head, has its physical association with central nervous system, cerebral cortex and controls pineal gland.
According to ancient religious teachings, it is believed that the masculine and feminine forces, Shiva and Shakti, gets unified at crown chakra.
Any blockage in crown chakra results in migraine, headaches, weak memory, nervous system imbalances, poor coordination, fatigue, low vision and sore throat or ear tingling.
This chakra masters all the lower six chakras, to balance crown chakra, first u need to work on other chakras and bring them in sync.
Crown Chakra is simulated by Lotus Mudra and Hakini Mudra and the seed mantra for crown chakra is OM. U can start with 5mins and try to go up to 20mins. If u can sit for long then it's great, in such case take the support of wall to avoid any stress on your back. Additionaly, if you have any lower back issues, the place a blanket underneath.
Hope this is helpful. Do write to me if you need any further clarification.
Yes, the mudra for root and heart chakra is very similar- index finger touching the thumb, however in case of heart chakra, the right hand in mudra will be touching to heart and left hand on knees in the same mudra, i.e. index finger touching the thumb.
For Root chakra mudra, both hands in mudra position will be placed on the knees.
Lotus pose or Padmasana in Sanskrit is a cross-legged sitting meditation pose, in which each foot is placed on the opposite thigh.
Hope this clarifies your doubt. Feel free to ask if it is unclear. Thanks
Thanks Shelly for your questions ! Here are my answers:
1. Yes, it would be beneficial if u practice Bija (Seed) mantras along with mudras, if u practice this while meditating it will give u a wholesome experience. You should start with Root Chakra and then move upwards to Crown Chakra.
2. Yes, practicing one chakra in one sitting is perfectly ok though one thing you should keep in mind that always go from root chakra to crown chakra. This is important, as I have also discussed in the article that kundalini energy always rises from base of the spine to tip of the head.
3. Start with 5mins, once comfortable u can go up to 20mins. I'll discuss this more in Part-II.
